  • Music Director (part-time)

    OVERVIEW: We are seeking a Music Director to lead and coordinate music for worship services at our small congregation with a small choir. This role requires flexibility, a passion for enhancing worship through music, and a collaborative spirit to work with the pastor and worship team. The Music Director will serve as the primary accompanist and oversee the church's music program, including leading a small choir, planning music, and supporting worship services. ACCOUNTABILITY: Supervised by the Pastor as Head of Staff
    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Music Selection:
    Choose hymns, songs, and liturgical music that align with the ELCA traditions and worship themes.
    Balance traditional and modern music styles to engage the congregation.

    Accompaniment:
    Play piano (primary) or organ during worship services.
    Maintain a high standard of musical quality and sensitivity to the liturgy.

    Choir Coordination:
    Work with the adult choir, organizing a weekly rehearsal to prepare for regular worship services and special occasions like Christmas Eve and Easter.

    Worship Service Support:
    Collaborate with the pastor to plan the musical elements of the weekly worship service.
    Ensure music complements the sermon and enhances the worship experience.

    Equipment and Resources:
    Oversee the care and maintenance of the church's musical instruments.
    Manage and organize the church's music library.

    SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS:
    Proficiency in piano and basic music theory required.
    Organ skills are a plus, but not required.
    Experience leading a choir or small group preferred.
    Ability to collaborate effectively with staff and volunteers.
    Flexibility and ability to adapt to a church environment with limited resources.
    Previous church music experience preferred, but not required.

    TERMS OF POSITION:
    Part-time, including Sundays and extra services (e.g., Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday).
    Annual salary range of $20,000 to $24,000, adjusted based on experience.
    2 weeks of vacation

  • Church Choir Director (part-time)

    Greenland Hills UMC seeks a part-time (12-20 hrs/wk) Music Director to lead music ministry for a dynamic, active congregation in the heart of East Dallas. The Music Director shall enrich and enliven the worship experience through direction, leadership, and supervision of the music ministry of Greenland Hills United Methodist Church. A biblically and theologically inspired program of music shall be extended to the community to guide and support all members in their journey to develop a vital and transforming relationship with God through Christ. The Music Director shall also provide intentional and focused training, guidance, encouragement, and discipleship to volunteers who answer a call to assist in this ministry through the offering of specific gifts. The position is accountable to the Senior Pastor.

    Regular Duties

    Direct and lead or supervise all choirs and instrumental ensembles for Sunday morning worship, special worship services, and presentations throughout the year

    Support the spiritual development of, and provide pastoral support to, music ministry volunteers as appropriate and communicate pastoral care needs with the pastor

    Select materials and provide training opportunities for volunteers

    Collaborate with the Pastor to plan music for the church’s worship life, including developing and supporting a musical life which incorporates global song, short-form responses, and responsorial singing in worship with an emphasis on theologically relevant and inclusive lyrics

    Communicate in a timely and effective manner with staff regarding music related information and topics, including weekly bulletin and newsletter, website, bulletin boards, and other forms of broadcast or social media

    Coordinate calendars for all choirs and music groups

    Participate on worship planning team and/or committee

    Communicate effectively with the congregation regarding worship music related topics

    Plan, budget, purchase, and maintain music related materials and equipment

    Maintain choral music library and insure that copyright laws are observed, including reporting congregational song usage to One License and CCLI

    Maintain building security before and after practices and programs

    Maintain Ministry Safe policies at all times

    Qualifications

    Bachelor’s or advanced degree in music with an emphasis in choral conducting or equivalent conducting experience

    Interest in and commitment to embracing the mission and ministry of Greenland Hills United Methodist Church

    Strong leadership skills with the ability to work collaboratively and build relationships with diverse groups of ages and people, including staff and church members

    Flexibility in working with a diverse group of volunteers and personalities

    Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.

    Ability to work with social media, word processing, e-mail, and internet.

    Job Description

    The primary responsibility of the Director of Music is to help members of Whaley UMC is to become fully formed, worshipping disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of Gainesville and the surrounding communities spreading Christ’s love through service in music. The secondary responsibility of the Director is to help facilitate and lead weekly worship, the chancel choir, and handbell group.

    Duties

    Direct and lead all Weekly Worship Services and special services of Whaley UMC. 

    • Providing music both modern and traditional based on scriptures and themes provided by pastoral leadership. This includes choosing hymns, anthems, special music, etc.
    • Use of Planning Center Online software to record and convey information that is needed for musicians, media screens, printing items, tech preparation, etc.
    • Help with preparation for special services for Advent, Lent, and special occasions throughout the year.
    • Assist and participate in the planning and implementation of funerals and weddings only as needed. (very limited)

    Direct and lead all Music ministries of the Whaley UMC congregation.

    • Plan, schedule, and lead weekly rehearsals with the Chancel Choir, Handbell choir, and special musicians.
    • Recruit children, youth, and adults to participate in ensembles and/or provide special music.
    • Select and schedule, anthems, bell pieces, offertories, and other special music to be presented as part of a worship service or church program.
    • Oversee the music library, and all licensure necessary for live performance, broadcast and livestream of all copyrighted music.
    • Purchase music, instruments, and supplies as needed for musicians and musical ensembles.
    • Supervise hired musicians, including but not limited to the organist and pianist
    • Manage technology needs for worship and live streaming.

    • Personal relationship skills that result in effective ministry with volunteers, staff members, and diverse individuals in the congregation and community
    • Passionate and observable commitment to the values, teaching, and mission of Jesus Christ, agreement with the Christian doctrines of the United Methodist Church, and its theological task
    • Compassion and vision for ministry with seniors, adults, youth, and children
