Perkins School of Theology Awards

Each year, Perkins honors individuals who exemplify leadership, service, and dedication. For the first time, the Distinguished Alumni Award and the Woodrow B. Seals Laity Award are being united under the Perkins Awards, celebrating both alumni and laity in a shared recognition of their impact.
 

Distinguished Alumni Award 

The Distinguished Alumni Award recognizes Perkins graduates who have demonstrated: 
• Effectiveness and integrity in service to the church 
• Continuing support and involvement in the goals of Perkins School of Theology and ÃÛÌÒ½´Methodist University 
• Service in the wider community 
• Possession of exemplary character 


Eligibility: Nominees must be alumni of Perkins School of Theology, including graduates of the Course of Study School. 

Nomination Requirements: 
• A nomination letter detailing the candidate’s vocational achievements and accomplishments 
• At least two letters of recommendation  


Deadline: Monday, March 3, 2025 
Presentation: Recipients will be honored at the Perkins Awards Banquet on Monday, April 7, 2025, at 6:30 p.m. in the Great Hall of Prothro Hall at SMU. 



 

Woodrow B. Seals Laity Award 

The Woodrow B. Seals Laity Award is presented to a layperson in the United States who has demonstrated a commitment to service through faith and action in the church, community, and beyond. Named in honor of Judge Woodrow B. Seals (1917-1990), this award highlights lay leadership that extends beyond traditional clergy roles. 

Eligibility: Nominees must be laypersons with significant contributions to ministry. 

Nomination Requirements: 
• A biographical narrative (600-1000 words) detailing the nominee’s service and impact 
• Two letters of recommendation from clergy, lay leaders, or community members 
• Contact information for the nominator 

 
Deadline: Monday, March 3, 2025 
Presentation: Recipients will be honored at the Perkins Awards Banquet on Monday, April 7, 2025, at 6:30 p.m. in the Great Hall of Prothro Hall at SMU.
