For our first class on Monday, Aug. 19, please read pp. 4-48, 51-64, and 72-78 in John H. Langbein, Renée Lettow Lerner & Bruce P. Smith, History of the Common Law: Development of Anglo-American Legal Institutions (Aspen Publishers, 2009).

Our first class is Monday, August 19^th at 8am.  The two required texts are: (1) Lind, Lathrope and Field, Fundamentals of Federal Income Taxation (20th ed. 2022) and (2) Selected Federal Taxation: Statutes and Regulations 2025 (or 2024) Edition.  Read chapter 1 and pages 39-56 of chapter 2.  We will focus (i.e., cover in class) on pages 18-32, 39-56.  Work problems 1 and 3 on page 56.  Please bring both texts to class.

Please note that I am estimating what we will cover; actual coverage will be based on the pace of the class as we move through the materials.

For the first two classes, please read the Aquinas selection on natural law beginning at page 52 of the required textbook:  Philosophy of Law (9th edition, 2014, edited by Joel Feinberg, Jules Coleman and Christopher Kutz) (“PL”).

3. What does “professionalism” mean and can it be taught/learned in a law school course? When you think of law practice, does it connote for you more of a “business” or a “profession”? (And what’s the difference between a business and a profession, anyway?)

Our first class (and, honestly, the whole course) will focus on “What is Privacy?” To start this discussion, I want each of you (individually) to submit a picture/image of what you think about when you think about “privacy.” This could be an image, graphic, or cartoon you find online, a photo you take, or drawing you make. You will not be graded on the "quality" of your selection, but it will be displayed in class and you may be asked to explain your choice. Please submit your photo to me by email (JLKOPLOW@gmail.com – I DO NOT check my ÃÛÌÒ½´email) no later than Sunday, August 15 (and sooner is appreciated).

    

2. Watch the Black Mirror episode “The National Anthem” (season 1, episode 1) and come to class ready to discuss the privacy issues in the episode. There are mature themes in this episode (…and in most all of the episodes).

4. Finally, to encourage broad and free participation in class – and so that we are not all absorbed in our personal “black mirrors” – I do not allow laptops in class, nor recording of the lectures. If there is an ÃÛÌÒ½´approved accommodation I will, of course, support that. I can record classes if there is conflict impacting multiple students, but otherwise ask that you obtain notes from a classmate if you are absent.
