The Maguire Ethics Center is proud to announce Ruth and Kenneth Altshuler Centennial Interdisciplinary Professor in Cities, Regions and Globalization Klaus Desmet, Ph.D., will give the 2024 Maguire Public Scholar Lecture.
Lecture Excerpt: Climate change presents significant ethical dilemmas that challenge us to balance immediate economic growth with long-term environmental sustainability. Should advanced economies bear more responsibility in supporting vulnerable developing nations? Can global agreements to mitigate climate change be effectively implemented? How does global warming influence demographic policies and population trends? At the heart of these pressing issues is the ethical disparity between the major contributors to climate change and those who bear its brunt. Join us in exploring these critical questions and our collective public responsibility to address them.

About Klaus Desmet, Ph.D.
Klaus Desmet is the Altshuler Professor of Cities, Regions, and Globalization at ÃÛÌÒ½´Methodist University. He is also a Research Fellow at the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR) and a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER). Desmet earned his MSc in Business and Engineering from Université catholique de Louvain and his PhD in Economics from Stanford University. Before joining SMU, he served as a professor at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid.
