This is You and Me features an 8-year old and his imaginary companion as he imagines epic adventures in the woods behind his house. Â In depicting the imaginary world, the team strove to visualize a serious world as interpreted by a child. Rather than the whimsical fantasy that an adult might imagine, the game treats the imagination with the serious play of a child.
As a third person action-adventure game, This is You and Me puts the player in control of the boy. Called only Me in the narrative, his companion – an imaginary monstrous guardian – is called only You. The names given to each character lend themselves to the central theme of a child at play and a child imagining himself at play. In place of an omniscient narrator, the boy and his companion speak to each other to convey the narrative of the game.
Each character in This is You and Me possesses unique abilities – from powerful combat abilities to more mundane characteristics like size and strength. The duo must work as a team and utilize their attributes to overcome the obstacles in their way. Opposing them is a seemingly endless horde of goblins, crafty but cowardly creatures the boy has conjured up in his imaginary world.
The team behind This is You and Me consists of a total of fifteen developers separated into one assistant producer, one assistant game designer, one assistant lead programmer with two additional programmers, one assistant lead artist with two additional artists, and one assistant lead level designer with six additional level designers. Project requirements were open-ended save for the requirement of being a non-first person game. The project schedule included one month of pre-production and four months of production time, all of which was limited to a total of twenty to thirty hours of work per week.Â
