IRS Tax Transcripts

If an applicant is selected for verification or institutional review and was not able to successfully use the Future Act Direct Data Exchange process, they will be required to submit a signed copy of their respective year tax return (Form 1040 and any associated schedules) or an official IRS Tax Return Transcript in order to complete their review process.

Requesting Transcripts

The IRS.gov website has a service called  that allows tax filers to obtain an immediate PDF download of their tax return transcript.  Once you have been able to download a copy of the Tax Return Transcript, you will need to upload it in StudentForms (see the student "To-Do" checklist in my.SMU).

Important items to remember:

  • Be sure to request a Tax Return Transcript and not a Tax Summary or a Tax Account Transcript, which do not contain the comprehensive tax data needed from the filer’s original Form 1040.
  • If you opt to request a transcript using Form 4506-T rather than using the online process, please list your mailing address for receipt, and once received you can upload a copy of the Tax Return Transcript into StudentForms (see the student "To-Do" checklist in my.SMU).
