Houston Religion Leaders to Discuss ‘Keeping Faith in Multifaith Society’

“Keeping Faith in a Multifaith Society” is the theme for the 2018 Houston Lay School of Theology, set for Aug. 25 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 5501 Main Street, in Houston. Gregory Han of Interfaith Ministries of Greater Houston.

Keeping FaithDALLAS (SMU) -“Keeping Faith in a Multifaith Society” is the theme for the 2018 Houston Lay School of Theology, set for Aug. 25 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 5501 Main Street, in Houston. Featured speakers and discussion leaders include Dr. Robert Hunt, Director of Global Theological Education at Perkins School of Theology and Rev. Gregory Han of Interfaith Ministries of Greater Houston.

The day-long course explores answers to questions such as, how do we foster healthy, diverse religious communities and personal faithfulness amid a multitude of religious claims? Panelists and speakers from different religions will join Dr. Hunt and Rev. Han in teaching ways to build strong relations across religious boundaries while maintaining your own religious identity and faith.

The six speakers and panelists include:

  • Shariq Abdul Ghani, a Muslim interfaith activist with the Minaret Foundation
  • Rev. Gregory Han, Director of Interfaith Relations at Interfaith Ministries for Greater Houston
  • Rev. Dr. Robert A. Hunt, Director of Global Theological Education and professor at Perkins School of Theology
  • Hansa Bhakti Medley M.D., Director of Outreach for the Hare Krishna Temple in Houston
  • Rabbi David Segal, Texas Organizer for the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism
  • Manpreet K. Singh, Supervising attorney and Chapter Representative for the American Board of Trial Attorneys, she also serves as a director and trustee with the Sikh Coalition

Attendees will share in honest reflection, deep exploration and lively discussion to be replenished and empowered in personal journeys of faith and service.

The Houston Lay School of Theology meets each February and August, offering an opportunity for participants to explore issues of spirituality, theology and church leadership with faculty from Perkins. Lunch is included in the course fee.

Advance registration is available through Aug. 20 for $45 for first-time attendees and $70 for returning attendees, with onsite registration costing $80. A $25 welcome discount is available to new attendees, both through advance online registration and at the door. Continuing-education credit (.5 CEU) also is available for an additional $15. A limited number of need-based scholarships are available to assist with the cost of this course.
